Death Is The Best Melody
With his rather peaceful nature, it's not much of a surprise to know that Frey isn't one for a fiery all guns blazing battle. He's more of the long range type, using his musical talents to cast an attack. Now, you may wonder how this works but it's pretty simple, depending on the melody, tone or pitch, a certain type of attack can be unleashed.
The higher the note, the sharper an attack becomes. To give an example of this, a top note could be compared to a senbon needle, a small sharp object used for precision killing rather than all out battle. When using the higher notes in a melody, Frey aims to either create a distraction by causing a small but painful cut on his opponent's body or just to cause some damage. Frey has created a musical movement called "Scattered scars" which is composed using only high notes which simulates someone being struck by thousands of senbon needles from all directions, pretty much cutting their body to shreds. This can only be fully utilized if his opponent is stunned or paralyzed.
The middle notes are average attacks, similar to hand-to-hand combat blows. It's pretty much self explanatory in that, they deal damage but probably wouldn't be used for giving the final blow in battle. Generally the middle notes are used to balance out attacks so they aren't used in an individual melody but instead, comprised into a mixed melody of high and/or low notes.
The lower notes are the more power hungry notes. They generally tend to be longer notes and come out as a somewhat more powerful melody. These notes are similar to heavy power based attacks such as perhaps fighters who use slower but devastating attacks. The lower toned melodies can be used as a final blow but require much more set up than a high pitched melody, they require more time and concentration to play.
Although, one thing that Frey made sure to develop was a melody that was specifically for death. The name "Death's Melody" kinda gives it away however, Frey sometimes refers to the song as "Shatter Me". The structure of the melody is so complex that it's like a double ended sword, it puts so much risk on himself that he has to make sure there are no threats to his own life before performing it because, once he starts, he is completely open to attacks and cannot stop playing or it will take the life of the one playing the melody! The melody is a mix of all three tones, swapping constantly between all three to provide a power hungry, blood thirsty tune which will kill any being.
